On Friday, May 16, 2025, Yoshio Kusakabe, Senior Assistant Professor Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Teikyo University, and Yasuhiro Nakamura, Assistant Professor in the same department, announced the results of an educational program that used the medical support experience on the Diamond Princess as teaching material. The results were published in the international medical education journal "BMC Medical Education" (Springer Nature).
This educational program uses as teaching materials the actual experience of medical support provided on the cruise ship "Diamond Princess," which attracted global attention for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the actual cases handled by Senior Assistant Professor Kusakabe, students are asked to think for themselves about the ethical dilemmas faced by medical professionals at the scene of disasters and infectious diseases, and learn from multiple perspectives through group discussions. In addition, because English is required for medication instructions, students also engage in exercises to write medication instructions in English, deepening their understanding of the need for English proficiency and the risks associated with the clinical application of AI. Through these efforts in this program, we aim to cultivate the ethics and professionalism required of medical professionals.
This paper has attracted attention both from within Japan and overseas as an advanced initiative that transforms valuable real-life experience in disaster medicine into education, and is expected to serve as a new model case for pharmaceutical education.
Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at our university offers practical education like this program through its "Medical Communication I" class, and its unique methods, such as mock medication instructions using tablet-shaped snacks and ethics education using documentary television programs, have been highly praised in domestic academic journals.
Our university will continue to share the latest research findings and provide an even more fulfilling learning environment.
