On Saturday, March 9, 2024, a double care lecture and networking event for medical professionals was held at Teikyo University's Itabashi Campus, with faculty and Graduate School from our university taking the stage.
This event was co-hosted with the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's "2023 Project to Support Medical Professionals in the Child-Rearing Generation," for which our university has been selected, and featured a lecture and networking event on the theme of "double care," which refers to the situation of caring for both childcare and elderly care at the same time.
Yumiko Okubo, Director of Support Center for Women Physicians and Researchers, Professor Chair of the Department of Medical Education School of Medicine Medicine, and Director of the Medical Education Head of Center gave opening remarks, followed by a lecture by Yukiko Terada, Senior Assistant Professor Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Medical Technology. Senior Assistant Professor Terada also serves as representative of DC NETWORK, Japan's first support organization for double caregivers (childcare and elderly care) among medical professionals. During her mini-lecture, she introduced the definition of double care and its social background. Following the lecture, Yuki Beniya (2nd year Graduate School of Public Health) gave a talk on balancing work with double care (childcare and elderly care), followed by a social gathering where participants could freely discuss double care. During the social gathering, participants split into groups and discussed the topic, led by Yoshiko Namame, Senior Assistant Professor in the Department Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Medical Technology, Chihiro Wakamatsu, Assistant Professor in the same department, and Yuriko Mata, Part-time Senior Assistant Professor in Graduate School of Public Health.
The event was attended by 25 people, including facilitators, including doctors and nurses from the University School of Medicine, faculty and students from School of Medicine, Faculty Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Faculty of Medical Technology, and Graduate School students from Graduate School of Public Health Doctors and nurses spoke about a wide range of topics, with double care as the keyword, including comments like, "The families I've met have also been double carers," and "It made me rethink my role as a medical professional." They also shared their own experiences with double care. For the participating students, it was also an opportunity to engage in open discussions with faculty and staff outside of class, not only learning about care for patients but also considering their own career plans, providing a truly in-depth learning opportunity. The University will continue to work on raising awareness of double care both on and off campus.
